Energy use
Does a Metabolism Booster Work? How Much Energy Use Rises
A metabolism booster is a product sold to raise how many calories the body uses. The best number we found is small. A review of 20 trials found capsaicinoids, the heat in cayenne, raised energy use by about 50 kcal a day. Its authors called them no magic bullet. No study of SodaBurn exists.

The term
What is a metabolism booster?
A metabolism booster is a supplement marketed to raise the energy your body uses. Energy use is measured in calories, written kcal.
The idea is simple. If a product raised energy use enough, it could add to weight care. The question is how much. The numbers below show that the answer is small.
How much
How much can a metabolism booster raise energy use?
The best figure we could source is about 50 kcal a day, from capsaicinoids (Whiting 2012, Capsaicinoids review). That came from a review of 20 trials with 563 people, and doses and designs varied.
Cayenne may also slightly raise energy use according to MSK, with sweating and stomach pain as side effects (MSK, Cayenne). For green tea and caffeine, NIH sees a possible modest effect on weight (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements).
| Ingredient | What is reported |
|---|---|
| Capsaicinoids | About 50 kcal a day more energy used |
| Green tea, caffeine | Possible modest effect on weight |
| Carnitine | Inconclusive for weight, per NIH (NIH ODS, Carnitine) |
Reading the number
Is 50 kcal a day enough to matter?
It is a small change. Capsaicinoid authors wrote that these compounds are not a magic bullet, though they could play a part in a weight management program (Whiting 2012, Capsaicinoids review).
Products that raise energy use often hold caffeine. FDA lists a rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, insomnia and jitters as signs of too much (FDA, How much caffeine is too much). Ask a doctor first if you have heart or blood pressure problems.

Its label front says "Metabolic & Thermogenic Support†". The dagger leads to FDA's statement that the claim is not evaluated. No study of the product exists.
Cayenne is printed in the blend at a ceiling of 1.55 mg per 1 ml, with no trial dose to compare here. Tap the bubbles to see each ceiling.

SodaBurn questions people ask
Do metabolism boosters work?
Only a little. Capsaicinoids raised energy use by about 50 kcal a day in a review, and the authors called them no magic bullet. Eating and activity remain the base.
What raises energy use naturally?
We found no source in our list on food or exercise numbers. CDC builds weight plans on healthy eating, regular activity, enough sleep and stress care.
Is a metabolism booster safe?
It depends on the ingredients. Many hold caffeine, which can cause jitters and poor sleep. Ask a pharmacist if you take medicine.
Does green tea speed up metabolism?
Evidence is mixed. NIH sees a possible modest effect on weight from catechins with caffeine, and Cochrane found almost none outside Japan. Liver injury is rare but reported with extract.
Who should not take a metabolism booster?
Ask a doctor first if you take medicine, have heart or blood pressure problems, or are pregnant or nursing. Under-18s should not use one.
