The basics
What is green tea extract in SodaBurn?
Green tea extract is a concentrate made from the leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. The SodaBurn label lists "green tea leaf extract" as the seventh of 21 names in its proprietary blend.
The NIH center that studies natural products says green tea holds catechins, plant compounds such as EGCG, and also caffeine (NCCIH, Green tea). A "thermogenic" product is one marketed to make the body produce more heat. Whether green tea does that in a measurable way is the open question.
The label prints no amount for green tea alone. It prints only the blend total, 15.47 mg per 1 ml. We have not seen a photo of the Supplement Facts panel, so check your bottle.
| Name on the label | Green Tea Leaf Extract |
|---|---|
| What it is | Extract of Camellia sinensis leaves; contains catechins such as EGCG and some caffeine |
| Place on the label | 7 of 21 names in the blend, in label order |
| Printed amount | Not printed. Name 7 of 21 in a 15.47 mg per 1 ml blend, so at most 2.21 mg per 1 ml |
| Daily Value | Not printed |
| Amount used in research | A safe intake level of 338 mg EGCG a day was derived for adults taking solid doses; the label does not print EGCG or caffeine |
| How the label compares | At most 2.21 mg of extract per 1 ml of blend, under 1% of 338 mg even if it were all EGCG |
| Strength of evidence | Cochrane (2012) found no real weight difference outside Japan; a 2009 meta-analysis found a small effect; NIH says a possible modest effect with caffeine |
| Marketed or traditional use | Sold for energy and weight |
| Main caution | Liver injury is uncommon but reported with green tea extract, mostly in capsules and tablets. Can lower the effect of some medicines (nadolol, atorvastatin). |
The number
How much green tea extract could one dropperful hold?
One dropperful holds at most 2.21 mg of green tea extract, and likely less. FDA rules list blend names from the heaviest to the lightest, so the name in place 7 can weigh at most 15.47 divided by 7 (21 CFR 101.36, Proprietary blends).
That is a ceiling, not a measurement. It also counts the whole extract, and EGCG is only a part of it.
Now the comparison. A safety review of 159 human studies set 338 mg of EGCG a day as an intake level for solid doses (Hu 2018, Green tea safety review). The ceiling is 2.21 mg. The review's figure is at least 152 times larger. The bars show the same gap for four blend names.
The evidence
Does green tea extract weight loss research show a real effect?
Green tea extract weight loss research shows little to no effect outside Japan, and a small one in older pooled data. Results depend on the product, the dose and the people studied.
A Cochrane review of trials lasting 12 weeks or more found a mean difference of about 0.04 kg versus control in six studies outside Japan (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (2012)). An earlier pooling of 11 studies reported about 1.31 kg and called the effect small (Hursel 2009, Green tea meta-analysis).
A review of 54 trials found no effect for green tea as a single agent and too little proof to recommend any herbal medicine for weight loss (Maunder 2020, Herbal medicines for weight loss). The NIH says green tea may have a modest effect with caffeine, and that little is known about weight loss supplements overall (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements).
| Source | What it found |
|---|---|
| Cochrane (2012) | Outside Japan, about 0.04 kg gap, 532 people (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (2012)) |
| Meta-analysis (2009) | About 1.31 kg, a small positive effect (Hursel 2009, Green tea meta-analysis) |
| Review of 54 trials | No effect for green tea alone (Maunder 2020, Herbal medicines for weight loss) |
| Study of SodaBurn | We found none |
Safety
What are green tea extract side effects?
Green tea extract side effects include caffeine effects and, rarely, liver injury. The NIH center says liver injury is uncommon but reported, mainly with extract in tablets or capsules (NCCIH, Green tea).
A panel review for USP linked case reports of liver injury to extracts rich in EGCG, with higher exposure when large doses were taken fasting (USP, Green tea extract liver review). The reviews tie the concern to concentrated extract at large doses, not to brewed tea. At a ceiling of 2.21 mg, SodaBurn sits far below those cases, but know the warning signs.
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pain under the right ribs: see a doctor right away.
- Jitters, a fast heartbeat, trouble sleeping or an upset stomach can signal too much caffeine (FDA, How much caffeine is too much).
Guarana seed extract also contains caffeine, and the label prints no caffeine total. FDA says about 400 mg a day is not generally linked to harm in most healthy adults (FDA, How much caffeine is too much).

Which medicines can green tea change?
Green tea extract can change how some medicines work. The NIH center says high doses may reduce the effect of nadolol, a heart and blood pressure medicine, and that the extract can lower atorvastatin levels (NCCIH, Green tea).
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Never stop or change it because of a supplement. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take diabetes medicine or insulin, blood thinners, blood pressure or heart medicine, stimulants or ADHD medicine, or seizure medicine. Chest pain or a racing heartbeat that will not settle: call 911.

FAQ
SodaBurn questions people ask
What is green tea extract?
Green tea extract is a concentrate of Camellia sinensis leaves. It holds catechins such as EGCG and also caffeine (NCCIH, Green tea). SodaBurn lists it as green tea leaf extract, seventh of 21 names in the blend.
How much green tea extract is in SodaBurn?
The label does not say. The blend total is 15.47 mg per 1 ml, and green tea is seventh, so it weighs at most 2.21 mg (21 CFR 101.36, Proprietary blends). The real amount is likely lower.
Does green tea extract help with weight loss?
Evidence is weak. A Cochrane review found about a 0.04 kg gap outside Japan (Cochrane, Green tea for weight loss (2012)), and a 54-trial review found no effect for green tea alone (Maunder 2020, Herbal medicines for weight loss). No study tested SodaBurn.
Is green tea extract a thermogenic?
A thermogenic is a product sold to raise body heat. Green tea is promoted that way, but the NIH sees only a possible modest effect, with caffeine, for weight (NIH ODS, Weight loss supplements). We found no test of the SodaBurn blend.
What are green tea extract side effects?
Common ones come from caffeine, such as jitters and poor sleep. Liver injury is uncommon but reported, mainly with extract in tablets or capsules (NCCIH, Green tea). Stop and see a doctor for yellow skin or dark urine.
Does green tea extract have caffeine?
Yes. Green tea contains caffeine (NCCIH, Green tea), and SodaBurn also lists guarana, another source. The label prints no caffeine amount, so ask your doctor if you are sensitive to it.
Can green tea extract interact with medicine?
Yes. High doses may reduce the effect of nadolol, and the extract can lower atorvastatin levels (NCCIH, Green tea). Ask your pharmacist before use if you take either one.
